Värtahamnen is an area under development. A new master plan is under reviewal proposing a mixture of offices and housing. As the rails next to the site have turned superfluous, this industrial railway will now turn into Södra Hamngatan - a wider street for cars and pedestrians bordered by trees. The proposal would merge three not yet built office blocks into a new Public Service Broadcast Center. Interesting about the site is the proximity to TV4 at Tegeluddsvägen. It might be a competitor but many seem to work for both public service and TV4 over their career as employment contracts tend to be short time, especially for the young and inexperienced. Choosing a site nearby could result in better routines for the employees whom wouldn’t have to adjust as much of their lives when switching employer. The proposal would turn Värtahamnen into a media center.

Public Service consists of the three companies SVT, SR and UR. The three companies are all run by the state. They are competitors and partners at once. Three individual companies but one common purpose. Different yet connected. Short time employment contracts in general among journalists makes it likely to work within both SVT, SR and UR during your career, and perhaps more than once.

Publicness is investigated in terms of Public Service’s meeting with the external actual public, as well as the internal publicness of the Public Service Broadcast Center. A public ground floor connects the building to its surroundings to physically invite the public into the building. A ground floor featuring a large TV studio with stands for live audience, a big concert hall, restaurants and lobby, makes sure Public Service Broadcast Center is to become a lively meeting place in Värtahamnen day and night.

Internally, the three companies are further connected by an elevated concourse - an extra ground floor that cuts through the three buildings. This privatized public space invites to spontaneous meetings between the public service workers as a common space to have brakes, celebrations, lunches and even offering a place to go and work within a more lively environment.
